I think when you look at this picture, you will see that a new addition has arrived here at Annabelle Doodles. :+)

A breeder friend of mine had a singleton (one puppy) just a day after Clara Belle delivered her litter of five. Because it is so very important for puppies to learn from each other, we felt that chubby Viva should join Clara's group for a few weeks. This will allow Viva to interact with other puppies her own age and develop the proper 'dogie skills' for her future well being. Initially Clara Belle was a bit put off, after all, she is nursing full time to keep her chunky babies well nourished and clean! After about an hour of my intervention and coaxing, Clara allowed Viva to nurse. Clara kept looking at the 'oddly' colored puppy in her group and seemed truly confused. Once the pup suckled, I brought her to Clara's nose so she could smell her own milk on the pup's mouth and this finally gained the pup's 'adoption' into the litter. Viva is now meshing in perfectly and all is well.

I also moved the pups today to the Puppy Room. Time will tell if this is a permanent or temporary move based on weather, light and acclimation. Initially, I had my tent up but the temperatures have been so mild, it was too hot under it. All the pups have strong coats and can regulate themselves, so we will see. At night, I will put a cover on the top of the fencing to prevent drafts when chilly. The floor has radiant heat and we also have a blower heater at the ceiling level. Should be rather toasty. :+)

Once I noticed that they are trying to get out of the box or moving to find a potty spot, this area will be changed to enhance that phase of development. Lots of changes coming up!

The pups will really begin to grow and evolve at a much more rapid pace now that they have reached the two week mark. Yellow and Orange girls have opened their eyes while the rest of their siblings are taking more time. Of course, they can't see anything of any merit - just shadows but it is a huge step in their short lives.

I had to take the pool out of my office because Blue Boy thought he should climb over it. Hmmm... So now they are in a Perla bed which has much higher sides but still allows Clara easy access for tending to the pups. She has already graduated to either sitting or standing for nursing - a tribute to the fast development of her brood.

All of the pups paw pads are reflecting the pigment changes from pink to black and in some of the pics you will notice their noses also beginning to darken. I would expect that all these pups pads will be two colors - pink and black which reflects the fact that they all carry the parti gene donated by their mom's DNA.

I am no longer using a heating pad in their area as they are now able to regulate their temperatures and huddle together for warmth when needed or spread apart for coolness. It won't be long before they will be transferred to the Puppy Room. Soon, I will introduce milk and gruel for them to try with the hope that they will enjoy 'food' and drink less from mommy.

Our two year old grandson, Pilot, had his first experience with newborns today. He was so gentle. Pilot has been brought up to love and respect all types of animals and to treat them properly. His good upbringing shows. :+)

As is typical of all guardians, they miss their family pet immensely, so I try to be as flexible as possible to allow them to visit and reconnect with their 'furry' child.

It is wonderful to have guardian homes that are relatively close so that this bonding continues during their dog's maternity stay here at Annabelle Doodles of New England. A visit assures the guardians that their pet is getting all the necessary attention and care; and really, what guardian can't wait to take a peek at the newborns?!

As long as I have been doing this, each nursing dam has settled back beautifully after each visit. As you can see, Clara is very content and enjoying the extra cuddles. Of course, all my girls get to visit and that always makes their day!

Thank you Erin, Shawn and Parker for your visit today! Pretty soon Clara Belle will have another human baby to befriend. I am sure Clara will be delighted that Erin gets to nurse that one! :+)

Almost a week old and CHUNKY!

The puppies have been doing so well! Clara is such an attentive and loving mom. Although they are not quite 1 week old, I did not think you would mind having individual pics. :+)

I should mention that the box they are in is 8 inches in diameter and they fill it up quite well!

As is typical, I began their Early Neurological Stimulation exercises when they were three days old and will continue until they are 16 days old. This program helps them to develop a stronger immune system and helps them handle stress better as they mature. You can read more about it here:

What a beautiful day it was outside this afternoon. Like all new mothers, a break of fresh air and some sunshine does wonders.

It was time for a bit of pampering for Clara, so I quickly gave her a fast trim and a brushing as all mom's need a bit of a 'vanity boost' after giving birth. :+) She delighted in it and then we went outside for some of that great sunshine and fresh clean air.

Those of you on Olive's list should know that she is doing very well and growing quite the 'pot belly'! I am also so pleased that she and her sister, Clara Belle, are getting along wonderfully even though they are both quite hormonal (Olive being pregnant and Clara Belle nursing her litter). That makes the environment here delightful. :+)

Olive is eating well, playing with our other dogs, full of energy and very, very cuddly. By the end of the month, we will have an x-ray to determine how many pups she is having. Sometimes x-rays are spot on (like Clara's was) and other times, pups are hidden too far up the ribcage and there can be a surprise or two extra than they see on film.

All in all, things are going quite smoothly here in the 'maternity ward'. :+)

Aside from the lovely mothering pics below, mommy and puppies visited my vet this afternoon to be sure that mom's milk is in and that she has 'cleaned' out her uterus properly. All the newborns were also checked and their dew claws removed. Each pup has gained weight and Dr. Estle remarked on how healthy, plump and beautiful Mom and pups were. An excellent report! :+)

Clara is very attentive to her new babies. She is always listening and checking on them to be sure all is well and they are getting all that they need. She keeps them spotless and well fed.

CLARA BELLE HAS DELIVERED! PICS!

Clara's very savvy guardian mom called me yesterday indicating that Clara was 'showing signs' so I asked her to bring Clara right over. She was indeed showing early signs of whelping and her due date was actually Feb. 7th! Thankfully, she was not too early and I anticipated perhaps a delivery sometime later today but Mother Nature and Clara had a different mindset.

Clara was so compliant, as usual. When I made my bed on the floor to sleep near the whelping pen, Clara dutifully walked to the pen and settled in. Thoughtfully, her guardian remembered to bring one of her daddy's used T-shirts and that comforted her immensely.

All night, Clara panted and panted with lots of potties outside. There was no sleep for either of us but around 6 am, I heard her pushing and by 6:18, her first pup was born. :+) She finished delivering her 5 pups by 9:35. Happily, there are 4 females and one hefty male.

Here they are! Such beauties!! :+)

Many breeders have told me that this is the BEST book to purchase if you are bringing a puppy into your family. It is called: RAISING PUPPIES AND KIDS TOGETHER - A GUIDE FOR PARENTS
by Pia Silvani and Lynn Eckhardt.

It can be bought at most book stores or Internet 'shopping malls'. I believe I saw it on Dogwise. It is roughly $18.00 and am told 'worth it'! So it might be the one book that you might want to read before Miss or Master Fido comes home to you.

I am very happy to say that upon palpation, my vet did feel 'nuggets' in Olive. This in no way indicates how many pups she may be carrying, but at least we have confirmation that she will be whelping some.

You can see how different they look when groomers cut them more like Poodles than Doodles! They don't even look like the same hybrid, let alone the same litter!!

I am very happy to share the news that Clara Belle is indeed pregnant. Cowboy should be pretty darn proud of himself!!

Clara was wonderfully compliant on the ultra sound table and Dr. Hutchins was able to detect some thriving babies complete with strong heartbeats. :+) I am hoping that there is at least one girl for me to keep back as this is Clara Belle's last litter and I will most definitely be keeping a girl. As advertised on the Home Page, I am seeking a local guardian home.

and look at all the posts about your furry ONE YEAR olds! I know I am a few days late letting you know, but 'better late than never!' The coats on this bunch were just wonderful as puppies and from some of the pictures I have received, they ended up simply gorgeous as young adults as well.

I can attest to this because I have Figgy in a guardian home close to me and see her often. She has the perfect Labradoodle coat type and I am betting so do her siblings.

Now that most of the coat changeover has occurred, it should be easy sailing with just routine brushing and trims to keep them all looking top notch. I wish I had more year old pics to share!

Percy Jaxon

Jaxon as a pup.

Jaxon loves to snuggle between cushions (or people). I was very pleased to find a second generation Cockapoo from lines with lots of champions in them. Not because of the fanfare given to that particular title; but because a champion shows structural confirmation that is true to the breed standard. A well put together dog shows balance and correct movement, an important element for good breeding.

Of course, a champion does not prove healthy genetics or wonderful temperaments, but you will rarely see 'nasty' personalities in show rings gathering Blue Ribbons!

Percy Jaxon, named after the Lightning Thief series of books for young adults, has mischief written all over his face. He does live up to his name but has also become a great companion to twin girls who adore him. He has been a great comfort to patrons of his mom's work and has all the ingredients to become a wonderful therapy dog.

Figgy Puddin

16 weeks of age.

Olive welcomed her litter to the world on New Year's day, so it was fitting that I name my potential keeper Holiday Figgy Puddin` after the song 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!'

She is a delightful ragamuffin whose loose, fleecy coat just blows like a tumbleweed in the wind. It is so soft and cuddly, just like her personality. Figgy is very close to her guardian mom and just loves to wake her up in the early morning with kisses and snuggles.

Figgy has a gourmet palate and is fed such a wonderful diet of vegetables, fruits, fish and other meat and cheese delectables. Rarely does this girl get anything that is not organic or fresh and she is not fussy at all.

Several times a day Figgy walks with her dad and enjoys the sights and sounds of the country. She is attentive to all things big and small and would love to chase the little wild things that hover about. She is very good with other dogs and is a people lover through and through.

I truly look forward to her litters as she is my first breeding hopeful from my Cockapoo infusion mating. Figgy is a perfect example of what that combination brings to the Labradoodle world.

Figgy moved in with us April 2011. She has been an amazing addition to our family. Each morning when she awakes from her spot in our bedroom, she gives a big stretch and heads outside for a walk
with Jim. Jim and Figgy are the morning risers in our family and I stay behind to catch a little more sleep. If the bedroom door is left open when they return, I am awakened by a Figgy Muppet. She starts at the end of my bed and walks.. hops... the whole length of it until she can reach me to give some Figgy love.

Figgy is a kind, sweet soul with lots of doodle energy. I know this term is over used but she really is a "fur" person in our family. She has fit in like she has always been here. She loves to play, but is just as happy hanging out and watching TV with us which is quite amusing because she actually DOES watch the television.

She loves company and greets every guest like they are truly here just to see her. She likes to be where we are. If we are in the kitchen she is too. But she is not usually demanding, she just likes to be with her family. Jim, Zack and myself are very happy that we added Miss Holiday Figgy Pudding into our lives and family.

Muddie Pearl

My ballerina. Pearl is a gorgeous cafe' girl that really needs to compete in Doggie Dancing. She literally can meet and greet you standing on her hind legs. I do believe she thinks she is human.

Pearl is a lovable creature who enjoys running with her human mom; sitting with her human dad and is the furry sister of her human youngster.

A coat that is non-shedding and lush, Pearl is the true version of a real teddy bear and just as comforting. Pearl is smart and has a good dose of energy that balances perfectly with her guardian family. She loves to be physical but also will snuggle with you as soon as you are on a couch (or floor) for pats and belly rubbing.

This is what her guardians have to say about her:

Pearl is very, very smart, energetic, loving, comical, spectacularly beautiful, alert, patient and playful. She also has periods of mellow, quiet thoughtfulness.

Pearl has never met a lap she doesn't like. When loading the wood stove, we can always expect loving, furry company. Pearl is in Nirvana when a member of our family invites her to cuddle and snuggle on the furniture with them. Wise Pearl asks Mom for on-the-furniture snuggles only occasionally; and usually when Mom's guard is down.

A curiosity about Pearl is that she is not a dog motivated by food. She often leaves yummy treats on the floor when they have been offered to her. Perhaps if there were competition from another dog it would be different.

She loves to go outside for leashed walks and can always keep up with me on my around town runs; and is great with our 9 year old and her friends. However, she wants to be in the center of the action so is sometimes 'uninvited' to play with them. Often, she plays hide and seek with our daughter, staying in the 'stay' position while Grace hides, then very quickly finding her when released.

We were originally interested in a labradoodle because our daughter has pretty intrusive asthma. Having Pearl in the household has not irritated Grace's asthma at all. Though she didn't test as allergic to dogs, Grace's asthma doctor told me that if we were serious about getting a dog, we should definitely go the hypoallergenic route just to stay on the safer side.

She lets us know when there is a car in the driveway, or in the neighbor's driveway, and when the school bus is nearing Grace's stop. Pearl loves our next door neighbor's free range chickens. Our yard is part of their range and Pearl will happily follow their movement around the yard, peering out and skittering from window to window to keep tabs on them.

When company arrives at the door, we put Pearl into her crate for about 15 minutes, until the person has acclimated to our house. Pearl is so smart that, often, if someone is coming to the door, Pearl will head for her crate while sending out warning barks that someone is here.

When she is feeling more pensive, she will sit directly in front of the door of the wood stove and stare at the lazy flames. At these times, I like to imagine that she is planning the next chapter in the novel she is secretly writing.

Pearl is the perfect fit for our family. Even my husband, who is not a traditional 'dog man' thinks Pearl is pretty great. Neither of us ever imagined that we would be people with the type of dog who looks like Pearl - longer haired, needing grooming, more poodle-appearing than the all purpose lab but she is just perfect for us...... and her non shedding feature is priceless.

Eloise Moppet

Oh my goodness, Miss Eloise Moppet!!! What a shock I had when I went to pick up this delightful munchkin. I knew Eloise was going to be small but I really thought her breeder made a mistake when he wrote down her weight, he did not. I could barely find her in the tiny crate. When I got home, however, and finally got her out, my husband and I looked at each other and instantly said - 'Oh...... how adorable are you'? Eloise is the most charming lady (in furs) that you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. Her personality is calm, friendly, playful, intelligent, focused, compliant with just enough mischief to make you laugh often.

Everyone who meets Eloise falls in love with this 'Thumbelina' version of a Labradoodle. For lack of an official size category, I am calling her a 'Micro Labradoodle'. At 8.2 lbs., what else fits???

Ellie has a lot of Poodle in her genes but her grand dam was a very small Labrador of just 40 lbs., so considered very small for her breed. Her grand dad was a Toy Poodle and it is very obvious, Miss Ellie takes after her French side. In any language, Eloise Moppet is the 'cat's meow' (and just as big!) It is going to be very interesting to see who I may use with this darling wee one.

What her guardians say about Eloise:

Although Ellie is only 8.2 pounds and approximately 12 inches tall, she has a big dog's heart in a tiny body. Ellie Belly is snugly and sweet but she has tons of energy and loves to play. She is wonderful with children and is a big hit with our 3 year old grandson and 15 month old granddaughter. She makes friends easily with humans and other pets and knows our neighbors better than we do. She loves to play with our nine year old cats and is particularly fond of our male cat, Charlie.

Ellie loves to chase a ball or a little Frisbee but she also enjoys sitting near us when we watch TV or read. She will frequently go right up the the TV and bark when dogs come on the screen or a door bell rings on TV.

She does well when she is home alone but prefers to be by our side at all times. We adore her and couldn't ask for a better friend.

Felix Gumshoe - Stud

As soon as Felix was born, I knew I wanted to keep him for my program. His silky coat just glistened and this is what I strive for in ebony colored Labradoodles. Believe it or not, true blacks are a difficult color to achieve. The color black comes in many shades just like reds and chocolates. If there are too many diluted colors in the parental lines, coats become 'muddied' and are less likely to have pigment density. Felix is Olive's son and has her stunning black fleece coat.

Words from his guardians:

Felix is truly a family dog and likes to greet each one of us enthusiastically by 'talking and rubbing against us like his namesake'. Then he immediately rolls over for a tummy rub. It is typical of him to have a stuffed animal in his mouth; or he might nibble or tug at your clothing in a very gentle way to say 'Good Morning'!

He loves everyone that he meets and his back end wiggles back and forth as he verbalizes his happiness. He loves to play with other dogs and has never uttered an angry growl. Felix has the sweetest disposition and temperament. He is very smart and loves to retrieve. This was helpful as Felix liked the water, but did not want to swim. He would jump along on his back legs with his head above the water for as long as he could. So it was necessary to give him a swimming lesson and now he loves to retrieve his "dummy" from the water and will go swimming any chance he gets.

Felix loves to be with us and will cry and carry on when greeting you even if you have only been gone for ten minutes. He is very content by himself, but prefers to be with us and can always be found curled up at my feet as soon as I sit down. If you are on the couch, then he will come up and snuggle with you or "ask" my husband (Tom) to throw the ball for him. He has the softest, silkiest, black fleece coat to snuggle with and is just so fun to cuddle and snuggle. He loves to chew on his toys and 'talks' to them while doing so.

His favorite movie is "Marley and Me" and he wants desperately to play with Marley and spends most of the movie expressing this desire. He also loves to watch commercials and hunting shows (a trait he inherited from his mom). He has the sweetest head tilt when spoken to and listens intently to every word. His vocabulary is building and he will go and see each member of the family that he is asked to go to. The neighbors and kids love to "shake his paw" and have him "high five" them. Felix is just the sweetest dog and is loved by all who meet him.

Affectionately called Phinny by his guardians, he is a sweet boy who loves to be with people as well as other dogs of any type. When I had Phin here for grooming, he was a perfect gentleman. At the vets, he is well mannered, can be handled by any tech and is non aggressive to other dogs. He has a wonderful, stable temperament and is a pleasure to be with. He has a thick, non-shedding coat that looks best when kept short on the body with a bit of length on his head and legs. I look forward to see what he will bring to our Labradoodle community.

Phineas is a sensitive, loving, loyal, playful,athletic and extremely sweet boy. Phineas wakes Mommy up at6:00 sharp every day with kisses and little nudges, no alarm clock needed . We haven’t yet been able to teach him about Saturdays and Sundays. Hethen immediately presents his ball, letting us know it is time to play. Whenplaying ball he will continuously fetch and return until you stop. If he spots a squirrel out the corner of his eye however, he is in motion and runshis very own self built obstacle course through the woods on our property. Ittakes him over and under downed trees, weaving at top speed! He has made a very distinctive walking path forthe rest of us. He just loves to be outside. Phineas also cankeep himself occupied inside with his balls. He loves to lay on his backand amazingly place his ball between his two paws and hold it in the air.

After play time, Phineas loves to join the family all cuddledup watching a movie. Although very much a mommy’s boy, he preferswhen the entire family is home and safely together. When one of the Owensclan is missing, he will wait at the top of the stairs for them to get homebefore settling into his bed for the night. When you do arrive home, hegreets you very enthusiastically, even when only gone for a few minutes.

Phineas also has a lot of friends in the neighborhood. When going for walks he knows where all his human and dogie friends live andloves to stop and socialize. Phineas is also very obedient andextremely sensitive. We have learned there is no reason to be very sharpwith him. Just give him the right look and he’ll roll and give youthe look as if he is truly saying he is sorry. All Phinny needs is hugs,kisses and a ball, and he is a very happy boy. :+)

Olive Oyl

Olive year and a half old.

Olive, my shadow dancer - always near or by me. She has a joyful prance that is delightful to watch. Her happy spirit keeps her curly tail very busy. Olive's goal in life is to please me. Sometimes, I think she is part cat as she loves to rub and wrap herself around my legs trying very hard to keep the other dogs away so that I can only pat her. Naturally, I make her wait as I pay attention to the rest of my crew; much to her annoyance.

Olive adores watching t.v. and is quite hysterical when interacting with pet commercials. I even had to put her in another room, watching a DIFFERENT t.v. when the Westminister show was on, as she could not stop herself from 'mingling' with all those dogs!!!

Olive wants to get to know strangers by back tracking a bit and sniffing your hand on her terms and I respect that. Be patient and she will be in your lap showering you with hugs and kisses.

A conversation with Olive is very engaging as she intently stares at you as if every word is so important. Her beautiful cocoa brown eyes twinkle mischieviously when she manages to climb onto your lap without permission and her soft, flowing coat is so easy to manage and care for.

Olive is the whole package - beauty, intelligence, carefree, silly and intuitive. Generally, her puppies are soft natured and make the most wonderful, gentle companions.

The 5 week baby pic on the left, shows at such an early age, how compliant Olive was even then. She is the same today. No need to ever raise your voice at Olive as just a look tells her you are not happy and her heart is broken.

Dancing Matilda aka 'Tillie'

When Tillie was born, I absolutely adored her sweet markings and little face. She was exactly what I was hoping for in the litter of Ocean States Jazzy and my stud, Rumple Sticks. Except for one pup, the entire litter was parti marked which was a wonderful surprise.

When it was time for me to pick my puppy, I traveled down and played with the litter. Little Tillie just stood out to me. I loved her mannerisms, sweet gentle temperament, coat type, pattern, and focus. I took her home and realized what a little gem I had in this lovely little girl.

Tillie meshed with my puppies and adults wonderfully and she was soon scooped up by a lovely semi retired couple that wanted to spend their time raising and enjoying the antics of a new puppy. God bless!!

Dancing Matilda (Tillie) made her first appearance in our lives on the Internet and it was love at first sight. From her brown button nose to the tip of her perfect “C” tail, she is simply Doodle-licious! Her adult coat is soft and wavy and tangle-free. She is sweet and gentle, happy to interact with people of all ages, from a rambunctious two-year old to those in their 80’s. She is active and playful, enjoying hikes, long walks on the beach, romping with her friends at day care, catching and hiding balls, and systematically emptying her toy bins. She likes to garden-- happily digging holes, smelling the flowers, “raking” the mulch. She is a budding interior designer, re-arranging & moving throw pillows several times a day.

Tillie is also a certified Therapy Dog, working with both children and adults. Her training began at 14 weeks with her first obedience class, followed by three more obedience classes, and her Canine Good Citizenship certification. At the same time, she was introduced to a variety of environments and populations—spending time with a hospice patient and comforting the bereaved, sitting patiently while being read to by young children, visiting residents in a retirement and continuing care facility, participating in a Reader Dog Program, attending book club meetings. She approached each new situation cautiously, but quickly adjusted to each new person. She has gained self-confidence and we look forward to new opportunities.

I do believe we have hit the magic time for Olive to meet her mate. Right now, the plan is to arrive in the late morning. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Miss Olive will be receptive to Ari's advances and that all will be well after a few minutes of frolicking!

Of course, Olive is no one night stand, so another date has been arranged for Sunday. Wine and dinner will be requested. :+)

Olive hasn't packed her bags yet, but she is waiting on the porch for her Knight in Shining Armor to arrive.

Update on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011: We had hoped that this duo would happily do the deed but needed to do an artificial insemination (A.I.) today. After conversing with other breeders, I am going to wait until Sunday to breed again and hope they will make music. Second stud is 'on hold' until this plays out.

Update on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 - I ended up having a second A.I. done on Sunday with ARI. The semen looked very good and all went well. Now it is all up to Mother Nature. :+) I am not going to use the second stud.

Camden Rose

Camden at 10 weeks.

Camden has big shoes to fill as I have retired her mom Maple Sugar, who I felt was as close to Annabelle's personality as I could hope for. When you have such an exceptional dog for your foundation stock, you really seek the pup that shows those qualities to continue in your lines. Like her mom and grand mom, Annabelle, Camden has no enemies. She adapts to people and dogs of all sizes. So lovable and smart with just enough mischief to keep things interesting. She lives with her guardian and spends much time with her 'extended family' as well as on her lovely property close by.

With a mission to please, Camden Rose, also known as Cami, is a friendly dog full of energy who loves to play. She watches television with me in the evenings and will sit right next to the TV if it's a dog commercial and talks back. She likes to cuddle and stays close to me wherever I am. She's smart, easily trained and loves people. We live on a lake, so she has grown to love the water and really enjoys socializing on the beach as well.

When Chico (RETIRED) was purchased, he already had a very successful breeding career in Canada. Rumple (RETIRED) is all class from his stylish prance to his soft flowing fleece coat. His personality is rather quiet but he will sound the alarm, by barking, if anyone comes to the door or your yard. He loves to cuddle and be close to his owners.

Maple Sugar

Another Annabelle daughter, Maple (RETIRED) mimics her mom right down to the cute head tilts that she makes when you talk to her. It is so endearing you can't help but smile. Maple loves to take rides in the car and is also an avid lover of the Maine snows. She follows the tracks made by her owner instead of using all her energy forging ahead. Aptly named, Maple Sugar is as sweet as they come and the color of fall maple leaves. Her favorite thing in the world is food.

Cadbury (RETIRED) lives a charmed life. She is the animated teddy bear of her owners. As a youngster, Cadbury was a lovely chocolate color which prompted her name. I figured she would lighten to a cafe` due to her DNA color genes and she did. She has the most gorgeous tail of all my doodles - a plume that just waves and blows in the gentlest of winds. I originally thought Cadbury would be a miniature, like her dad, but she is a well built medium. She reminds me of a ballerina - dainty and sinewy in the same package. Sadly, Cadbury's breeding career was cut short due to her developing kidney stones. I did not want to take any risks, so she is spayed.

When sweet Harriet (RETIRED) was born from Annabelle and Brickie, my husband insisted we keep a pup from that mating. I am so glad he did. 'Harry' has been called an 'old soul'. I have never had a dog simply gaze into my eyes with such love and devotion, as she. Her creamy wool coat is typically filled with dirt and debris which is why I lovingly call her 'Dirty Harry' most of the time.

In August of 2009, Annabelle found a 'treat' at the beach while visiting and ate it. That treat was a piece of magnetic, corroded metal covered in something yummy that gave her 'heavy metal toxicosis'. At the time, we did not know this. We did realize something was wrong and it was very bad. Many trips to the vets and specialists did not give us a diagnosis. Numerous tests came back negative that included blood work, parasite work ups, numerous x-rays, spinal taps, MRI of her head/brain, neurological tests, etc, etc. All of them negative.

Finally, a pet communicator contacted me and insisted I have her stomach x-rayed yet again. At my insistence, this was done and the metal was exposed high on her stomach wall. It had easily been there for over a month and had leached into her organs and central nervous system causing severe damage. Annabelle had surgery on Sept. 5, 2009 to have the metal removed. She survived the surgery.

I then decided to have Annabelle seen by a holistic vet for detoxing. This helped her a lot but I had been cautioned that it would not 'cure' her. Later, I found another holistic vet that uses Traditional Chinese Remedies and Acupuncture. For two years, Annabelle has seen this vet and has done very, very well. She actually improved so much that she looked and acted normal in all ways. However, as I had been warned, relapses can and will occur. Relapses can last for days, weeks or months but she is not in pain and enjoys what each day offers. Eating, drinking and defecating are all normal, she just can't seem to stay sturdy on her feet. During these episodes, she can't climb numerous steps, one or two is about all she can manage. Rising to her feet can be difficult, but once up, she can walk and enjoy a short trip on a leash. She is jovial, loving, smart, comical and adorable. We know that this unfortunate trauma will most likely shorten her normal lifespan. We hope it does not.

Annabelle loves people and visitors, so she will continue to welcome people when you come to see puppies. Don't pity Annabelle, by you paying attention to her, you have given her a wonderful gift that she treasures above all else (except a yummy treat!). Enjoy Annabelle's loving and gentle spirit, it is a gift she shares with everyone. When she falls, help her up, she will thank you with a wag of her curly tail. :+)

I forecast a busy winter here at Annabelle Doodles of New England! Beautiful, black Olive Oyl has finally come back into heat after a year+ long hiatus and will be bred to Southern Maine Labradoodles's, ARI. This boy is a solid medium (18" and 35 lbs.) and is an excellent match for Olive, so their pups will be a bit bigger than Clara's at maturity.

ARI has produced wonderful pups for his breeder with 'therapy like' temperaments and quality coats. I expect the same. According to our color DNA experts, this mating should produce half blacks and half cream blends. It has been a long time since I have had blacks available and I simply LOVE the way the sun makes them sparkle and shine like black diamonds. My absolute favorite color in the Labradoodle color wheel.

This is the handsome, ARI with a friend. I love the way his coat drapes just like Olive's does. ARI does not carry for chocolate, so all the pups will either be black like mom or cream with strong black pigment, like dad. A stunning combination, to be sure!

There is a chance some pups may have curly coats, but my prediction is that most of them will have wavy, easy care coats like their parents.

This is what ARI's owner says about him:

'He is sweet, gentle and very patient with everything and everyone. He is honestly the perfect dog.'

Phineas came for a hair cut today!

Finally, I was able to give one of my studs, Phineas T. Barnum a grooming! We had been trying to figure out a good time frame for quite some time.

What a delightful young man this boy is! So compliant and a perfect groomer's candidate. No brush biting, whining, or obnoxious behavior. I would like to profusely thank his guardian mom, Cathy, for an amazing job of keeping Phin's coat mat free for the very difficult time of the coat changeover, - it is quite a challenging task but Phin never had to be shaved to the skin because of her diligence.

Phin has a very thick coat and should always be kept short to look his very best. Although I cut his body very short, I did this so that by Christmas he will look just about perfect enough to hang on the tree... (well, cute enough to sit in front of it, anyway).

I love Phin's big head and large fleshy nose. He has a wonderful ear set and his ear leather is not thick - a very nice trait to have.

Thank you Phin, for being just wonderful! (Cathy, too!).

Spring Creek's Dancin' With a Cowboy - full coat.

We hitched up our wagon and spit-shined our boots for a quick two-step to Connecticut so Clara Belle could be twirled around the barn a couple of times with her handsome 'Cowboy'! What a dazzling pair!!! Cowboy is a stunning redhead with a coat of silken waves that makes you drool. I could not believe my luck when I found out Cowboy's dance card was not full. Whoa!

I am expecting small mediums from this mating with fabulous coats in red, apricot, cream and caramel. Unfortunately, there will be no blacks but some pups should have white markings which I adore! Height range - 16 to 18 inches. Weights of 25 to 35 lbs.

This afternoon I got the call I have been waiting for - it was Clara Belle's guardian to tell me she was finally bleeding and to be sure I marked the day. Ha, ha.....she didn't have to tell me twice! Now I will be checking out the stud that I had planned on using to make my final decision on her 'date'.

If all goes well, we will be looking at pups being delivered around Valentine's Day. How sweet. :+) Stay tuned for pics of the happy pair!

I can hardly believe that two years have gone by already! Time surely does fly, but I am always surprised when I get an email telling me one of the babies is having a birthday. Over the years, there are quite a few! (Thanks, Lucia!)

So, I hope Lucia, Lexie, Skidder, Liam, Phineas, Benzi and Tug are all getting extra hugs, kisses and well wishes today. :+)

Your mommy will be having her third and last litter in 2012. We are hopeful to breed her next month and then she will retire. I hope to add one of her baby girls to my program. Clara Belle is too sweet to not continue her legacy.

Today was a milestone for our little boy. He had a very important appointment with his Canine Ophthalmologist for his C.E.R.F. eye exam. Good breeding practices for a potential stud require a passing C.E.R.F. exam from a certified canine eye vet. During this exam, the vet looks for eye folds, PPM's (Persistent Papillary Membranes), Distichiasis (extra eyelashes), cataracts and many other issues that can be passed onto pups. Some of these 'dents' have minimal impact while others render the pup ineligible for a breeding program.

Happily, the vet said that Jaxon had 'beautifully healthy eyes - perfect!' Music to my ears for sure!!!

I have to share that Jaxon was such a hit because he is so very, very social to both people and other dogs. So many people (and dogs) came up to him to have some interaction and he loved it. :+) His favorite by far, is to come up to you wagging like crazy and then slump down on the floor to have his belly rubbed. He has this down to an art form.

As you can see, he really worked the room and is totally exhausted.

Late last night, I drove to the Jetport to pick up my new stud hopeful. There was a crate waiting for me on the Continental counter and I almost missed it, because he was so quiet. I took him to the Ladies Room to take him out of the crate and boy did his tail wag! I am assuming it was because he was happy to see me but I do believe it was more because he was out of that tiny crate! Nonetheless, Jax is a VERY social, well tempered, lovely pup and a charmer. :+)

After our vet visit this morning, I took him into our playground and he was so happy to have some freedom!

He found a stick and happily chewed on it.

Then he found a second prize, a pine cone and pranced delightedly carrying it every which way as if he thought he had to keep his littermates from getting it.

An introduction to Jaxon - Parts 1 and 2

Part 1:

Due to my husband's hip surgery, I did not breed two of my girls this spring. Carl is healing slowly but consistently which has given me a lull in my breeding program. It also afforded me the extra time to research for the addition of a possible new stud for Annabelle Doodles.

I would like you to welcome 'Percy Jaxon'. As with all my dogs, his name has a story. If you have avid young readers in your home, you may be familiar with the trilogy 'The Lightening Thief'. The young hero is named Percy Jackson, but I prefer the more unique spelling of the young hero's last name. Jaxon has a light red and white 'tuxedo' pattern and should weigh 18 lbs. or so at maturity. I expect him to be about 16 inches in height.

Jax is a second generation Cockapoo. The experience of integrating my first generation ALAA approved Cockapoo, 'Coriander', into one of my lines has provided me with valuable experience with regard to using this foundation breed infusion. I used him twice but only kept back one pup named 'Holiday Figgy Puddin'. She is gorgeous.

So many people do not realize that in order to be an 'Australian' Labradoodle, there MUST be genetic DNA material by at least three different foundation dog breeds. From heritage DNA done by many breeders in the U.S., we found that the majority of breeds that comprised the Australian Labradoodle were the Poodle, Labrador and Spaniel varieties - hence my interest.

To be honest, I have always liked the looks of a well balanced Cockapoo. The heads have a nice broadness with a shorter muzzle; the eyes have a soft expression; the coat is silkier and the body has a nicely squared, sturdy confirmation. It is also a breed that is considered 'allergy' friendly - an essential element.

When considering the introduction of a foundation dog, it is extremely important to be able to trace the AKC pedigrees on both the Spaniel and the Poodle that produced the Cockapoo. If you are lucky enough to find Champion stock in both lines, this shows correct confirmation and type for each breed. Jaxon's foundation lines show 14 Champions scattered throughout five generations. His Cockapoo father, Koala Mars, is in the ALAA's Labradoodle Registry database as an accredited infusion for the Australian Labradoodle's breeding criteria. To date, his progeny have been shown to have a strong, solid health foundation which is so important for the future health of the Australian Labradoodle. His Cockapoo mom, with the romantic name of 'Juliet', has numerous Champions in her American Cocker Spaniel lines.

As with all our doodles, Jaxon will need to pass our stringent testing protocol before being used as a stud at Annabelle Doodles. He will, however, be available immediately for a guardian home.

When something is not what it seems....

In yesterdays mail, I received this very nice letter from the 'National Association of Professional Woman' - NAPW explaining to me that my 'membership' was approved. Huh?

This just makes me wonder how I 'became invited'. I was never contacted nor did I ask to be considered. Since neither occurred, I asked myself just how 'special' is this letter? Is it sent to thousands and thousands of women across the country at random? If so, it diminishes its impact and is definitely misleading as I did nothing to warrant this invitation.

Perhaps other women/breeders would be gushing with enthusiasm to have received such a glowing invite . I guess, I am so traditional, that I believe you need to earn such recognition through much effort and achievement not simply as a result of a mass mailing!

Oh, did I mention that it included a stamped return card to join its membership? I had to smile that any woman would see this as anything more than a marketing ploy.

I wanted to post this here to show the general public that 'not all accolades' published on a website have value. Sometimes, it is just more marketing rhetoric.

I 'filed' it in the circular bin. I much prefer a personal communication from my clients telling me they are happy with the quality and service of my program. :+)

Car Sickness

Car Sickness

The first thing to realize when dealing with car sickness is that in 95 percent of cases it is stress related and not motion related. The most powerful memory imprint of any dog's brain is probably the car ride when it was taken away from all it ever new to be safe and secure, its litter mates and its mother. The most traumatic memory a young dog has is in relation to a ride in a car. So it's not surprising that subsequent rides in a car should evoke very strong mental and subsequent physical trauma.

How Can I Make My Dog Feel Better?

The solution is very simple. If the dog has been sick in a car then estimate how long it was in the car before it was sick, say 20 minutes? Find a park about 5-10 minutes from home, preferably one just around the corner, even one within walking distance that the dog has been to before.... but this time drive there. Ideally have someone else in the car too, to soothe the dog and distract him from the ride. Keep him happy all the way to the park. When at the park do all the enjoyable things that the dog loves, fetch the ball, chase the Frisbee, frolic with dad, etc. The stay at the park doesn't need to be that long.... just as enjoyable as possible. Then drive the dog home soothing him all the way again and when home make just as much fuss of the dog as you did at the park. Finish the session with his meal or a treat if time and conditions permit.

This exercise is repeated several times a day or daily if time is limited. Once the dog is enthusiastic to go in the car then the length of the trip is lengthened slightly to 10-15 minutes etc. Once you can drive with the dog for 30 minutes with no signs of stress or anxiety then you have the problem pretty much licked. Some dogs may take a little longer than others. The idea is for as many happy repetitions as possible to overwrite the initial mental imprint the dog has from its youth (or whatever other event caused the initial trauma).

I have had a (client's) dog that suffered from chronic carsickness totally 'cured' (if that is the right term) in 3 days. That was with five car trips per day over the three-day period. The owners were impressed (even if I say so myself) and I am still getting referrals from them as a result.

This method has always worked, but I have heard of one dog that was sick due to some kind of balance problems and this method didn't work for it. A trip to the vet after the method failed brought the problem to the surface. But if it only works for 95 percent of the dogs it's used on then I think it's quite successful!

Train with trust not fear.

Attenion Olive x Coriander littermates!

Figgy came to visit me for a haircut the other day and I thought it would be nice to share her pics.

She arrived looking like a big brown bear with at least 4 inches of hair length. When I was done, she was much shorter. On September 1st, this litter will be 8 months old, so THIS IS THE TIME to have them cut short so that you can prevent severe matting during the coat changeover. The 'shedding' of the pup coat to the developing mature coat can be daunting if you do not stay on top of it. To miss a brushing/combing equates with a necessary and COMPLETE shave down of your doodle. Far better to cut them to about 3/4 inches now, than have a 'bald' doodle!! :+)

Figgy is going to be the color of her grandfather, Rumple Sticks. A gorgeous Lavender. You can see all the highlights developing all over her coat.

Fig is just about 16 inches and 27 lbs.

The following post was done prior to my sweet Chap's early demise. I cannot take his sweet face, adorable prance and loving personality off my Annablog because he will always have a large piece of my heart. Chaplin was 5 days shy of 7 months.

Chaplin weighs a solid 18 lbs. and is 15 inches tall at 7 months old. He will be a true mini size and has excellent boning and structure. Chaplin is a wonderful combination of Miniature Poodle, Labrador and Spaniel genetics. Poodle genes gave him intelligence and a non-shedding coat; the Spaniel produced his silky curls and sturdy boning; and the sweet Labrador his gentle, endearing temperament. I hope you can understand why I am so 'over the moon' about this boy and am looking for a wonderful home for him.

I am so delighted with his confirmation. This shot shows his great top line and tail set. His legs are not short like some miniatures. They balance his body perfectly. A bonus - he loves the water!

I did comb him just before I took these pics and you can see the flow his coat has. Nary a hair came out of this boy - a true non shedding, curling fleece coat.

Chaplin's physical appearance appealed to me immediately. With his fabulous early test scores, I am beyond pleased. To find him the perfect local guardian home that has a fence and children would really be the icing on the cake. Chaplin is very friendly towards other doggies. Today was the first day for puppy pickups. Three adorable boys left today to begin their new lives far away from North Berwick, Maine. I know they will do well in their new homes after a bit of adjustment. I wish everyone well and hope you will stay in touch. Contact me any time for questions or concerns. MR. TEDDY BEAR aka Green Boy was the first boy to leave the nest. They have been waiting for their pup since Olive's litter. I think the length of time it took to name him was almost as long!! LOL! A lovely black Teddy Bear he surely is. :+)

You could not contain this couple's excitement about Noodles becoming part of their lives.

'What's the world about, Alfie?' I think this couple is going to get plenty of answers to that question with their sweet boy.

Sunday, June 12th, two more left the nest. 'Harry' has finally gone home to his family. I am sure he is going to add a lot of smiles and playtime to this home.

'Lucky' is going to be one busy pup! His young owner is involved in a lot of activities and I do believe Lucky (and Mom) will be attending most of them!

Beautiful black Onyx was picked up 6/15/11 and rode in style to New Jersey. She is going to be a wonderful pet to two very excited boys.

They wanted a second doodle and when mom noticed that Hazel now 'Randi' was for sale, they hopped in their car and came to meet her. It was love at first site and now they have two doodles from Maple, but from different litters. Sometimes, things work out the way they should. Randi left the Annabelle nest on Saturday, June 18th. :+)

The last pup to be picked up was Molly. A picture perfect day arrived for the event. Molly had her bath in the late morning and was fresh smelling and fluffy for her grand entrance. She is making her trip to Connecticut harnessed for safety, laying on a lamb's wool bed, chewing a Bully Stick. Life will be good! Molly is destined for therapy work. I wish them well in that endeaver. :+)

Just wanted to update everyone that the pups' trip

to the vet for their shots and Health Certificate went very well. They are EXCELLENT in the car. Not one of them vomited or had wet muzzles. Neither did any of them piddle or poop on the vet's floors. How gracious of them!

They are also doing very well with the intro to crates. I put two in a crate at night. The first night, there was some complaining, but last night (second time), one weak objection and all was quiet until I woke them at 6 AM. I am very pleased with this. :+) This is not to say that they won't complain for a bit when you get them, but they should settle quickly.

Sitting is still 'hit or miss' but they are getting it. :+)

I heard a bunch of happy barking and got up from my computer to find out what was going on and grabbed my camara. The pups were playing in the sandbox Coup and were having a ball digging and chasing - exactly what it is there for. :+) I knew if I went outside, I would ruin the moment so took the shots through my window.

Olive sits pretty after being groomed. I think she is stunning and would want to produce carbon copies over and over. To groom Olive is a total pleasure...mats just slip off. I use a comb, not even a brush. Black and beautiful with an amazing fleece coat - it is a winning combination.

It was quite the undertaking. Bad weather for the greater part of April hindered the process greatly, but it is complete and I am so grateful it is DONE!

This was the space we were converting from mud and weeds to a new play-yard with artificial grass for the pups.

A couple of months later, lots of digging, sore muscles and determination, we have this new space. The pups are loving it as the rest of these pics show.

They ran around so much, they slept very, very well.

They ran like this for over an hour.

This is what they needed so badly - lots of running to expend that energy!

It is safe, clean, can be disinfected and provides a stimulating area for our doodles. :+)

Introduction to water......

Having finally completed the puppy play-yard, TUGGIE came out to play.

This is TUGGIE.

Practically everyone came to check out this HUGE new toy.

Some were more curious than others and were gathering confidence.

Ultimately, it was Chaplin who was the first one in with Hazel following soon after. Onyx and Noodles 'walk the plank'. I bet tomorrow, if it is warm, more will jump in. :+)

They played like hooligans. I actually had to squirt them with my hose (lightly, of course) to calm them down! They had a bark fest going and I try to be considerate of my neighbors. They did not mind the light spray down at all and it DID stop them from continuing to make a racket! It is very difficult to 'tone down' 9 puppies (including Chaplin) quietly. The hose on a light spray worked wonderfully. They got cooled off emotionally and physically. :+)

Alfie is NOT grouchy at all, but surely looks it in this photo! He is the sweetest thing! Did you notice is little sweat drop right below his nose?

Ever curious, Harry found something to keep him entertained. He has not missed a beat.

Early this morning, the boys went for a ride to my vets. They are having their neuters and microchips today. I have already been called that all has gone well and I will be picking them up later this afternoon.

In the meantime, the girls are having a lovely time enjoying lots of space with just a minimum of 'annoyance' from Chaplin. Right now, they are all in my kitchen enjoying their freedom.

Newly named this morning, Molly is resting in the shade.

Onyx knows where all the 'cool' areas are.

Like everyone else, Hazel has claimed a shady spot for herself.

When the boys are returned, this lovely respite will be gone and things will be back to normal in a blink. I will need to keep them separated for about 12 hours or so. You would not believe how very little these early operations affect a pup's energy. They don't skip a beat!

I swear, the sweat is still running down my face as I did my best to get pics of these pups for their 10 week updates BUT.... they are so full of energy, I did more chasing than 'clicking'!

I sure hope by next week's pic segment, that we have the play-yard finished because these guys NEED to expend more energy by running their silly legs off - not mine! :+)

So forgive me if some of the shots are not as sharp as others. The sun was setting too fast for me to stay out much longer and the mosquitos were quite hungry.

Our son was here this weekend to help us get some work done and he left this morning. Then I had puppy family visits this afternoon, so pictures were not done till early evening.

of a name for their pup and once known, send it off to me. I will begin to call them by it and use it to teach them the 'sit' command.

I am happy to say that Black Boy has already been named 'NOODLES'! I will be laughing every time I call him! :+)

Teal Girl will be known as 'HAZEL MAE'. Since her mom is Maple Sugar (after the tree) and Rumple 'Sticks' is the daddy, I decided to keep the Mother Nature theme going, hence Hazel - another type of wood which has a reddish cast to it, sturdy but flexible. It fits. :+)

Won't it be fun if everyone gives the 'reason' you picked your pup's name and I can publish it here?

I will be updating this post whenever I get a new name so keeping reading! I know several of you 'sort of know' but are not quite committed to one yet. :+) Joyce

Maple's pups are finally assigned.

Today was a very long and important day. Karen, owner of Animal Manners, Inc. came for the second temperament testing of Maple and Rumple's litter after which we sat down to discuss the applications and assign pups. This is always a difficult session because there are always more than one person that wants the same pup - it has never failed. :+)

With many breeders, the client meets the puppies, picks the one they want and off you go. Not so, here. Karen and I hash out what each individual pup needs and which applicant best suits that pup. Some need a quiet environment, while others are better for active families and children. No placement is absolutely perfect because it takes two to make it all work out - the pup AND the owners. Puppies take patience and dedication - sort of like a marriage! Some days will be better than others and sometimes you may wonder why you wanted the work of a pup.

I can tell you that the process to place a particular puppy with you was not easily made. We took much into consideration - the two tests, the pup's maturation, the pups' interaction individually and as a group and the application to name a few.

Nine weeks old and so, so busy! (M x R #3)

It has been busy here of late with several visitors, lots of rain to make it difficult to complete projects, plus many emails about who is getting whom :+) and everyone is getting anxious for the new play area to be completed - especially me.

The pups now come into the kitchen area to play and enjoy it very much. Now I have several 'escape artists' every time I try to keep them in the pup room as I go in. The only time this is an easy event is when I am holding a platter of food!

Tomorrow is a hectic day with me taking Chaplin for a vet visit and then coming home and loading up the pups for their eye CERF visit in Portsmouth, NH. Then Wednesday is the BIG day for the temperament tests and, if all goes smoothly, assignments. I will call you with the news as soon as I am able.

to Harriet and Rumple's litter of May 18, 2008.

Now this was a litter I remember so well as my poor Harriet was one sick doodle mom! It ended up being her last litter which made me sad but also thrilled that we averted disaster by doing two surgeries in one week to save her life. Bottling feeding ten pups was round the clock work for me but the end results were worth every sleepless night and exhausting days.

Today Harriet is still my little 'ghost princess' and happily sits on my lap kissing my face each night as we cuddle and watch t.v.

A busy day between raindrops! (Maple litter Wk. 8)

The pups and I had a busy day today. Early this morning all of them were loaded into my wagon for their second trip to the vet since the day they were born. At 8 weeks, it is time for their first DHPP shot. This is for Distemper, Hepatitis, Para Influenza and Parvo Virus. I did not feed them before I left, so I did have a few grumpy pups complaining on the trip there. Nothing too bad though. I would rather listen to a bit of whining then the retching sounds of upset tummies. Once at the vets, they all 'blessed' his super clean floor (normal) and none of them complained about their shot or exam. The trip home was nice and quiet. :+)

Once home, I prepared a super large breakfast for them all and I still get amazed at how quickly they can consume all of it. A treat of organic blueberries was enjoyed by all.

After completing a couple of errands, I thought I would try to get their 8 week pics outdoors between raindrops and was thrilled to have succeeded!

Black Boy followed me all over and it was difficult to get a good shot of him because he was always underfoot. Finally, a truck went by and he stopped to listen. Thanks whoever you are that was driving! 7.8 lbs.

Teal Girl raced like a Greyhound. She was happy as a clam in mud and it shows! 8.7 lbs.

Pink Girl felt this path was made for her. I do believe she might have wanted a red carpet but that was not happening. 7.7 lbs.

Stripe Boy, true to his nature, sat and gazed at the grass, the flowers, the birds.... 11 lbs.

Red Boy was like a tiger in the woods. There were places to go and things to smell and he was determined to experience them all. 7.7 lbs.

Blue Boy. This was the ONLY still shot. When his toes hit the ground he ran and leaped and rolled. He is most definitely an outdoors man! 10.5 lbs.

Green Boy should be called 'Dandy'. He is so prim and proper. 7.5 lbs.

Orange Girl was a dancing ballerina outdoors. She just had the best time as evidenced by this shot. 8.2 lbs.

A late update on the first temperament test.

Hi all!

It is spring, and like most people, we are very much involved with spring projects. As already mentioned, we are putting in artificial turf in the puppy play-yard which required lots of digging, leveling and shoveling. It is roughly 15 by 100 feet, so A LOT of digging, etc. The pups were quite interested in watching us, offering a few barks of encouragement as we worked. Now that everything is prepared, we are hopeful for the delivery of our grass this coming week. I can't wait for this group to enjoy it. :+)

Along with that project, we have replaced our sloping grassy pathway to our front door with graduated steps. So, again piles of dirt removal and backbreaking work placing stones for embankment stability. We are still in that process as 'the rain has come'.

In between all of this, the pups continue to love the area they do have and are now not locked in the x-pens at night. In the morning, I find very little use of the litter box - most go outdoors in the early morning to potty outside. :+) I intend to fold up the x-pen and bring in more crates for them to sleep in with the doors open. We will see if they like this.

This past Wednesday, my trainer came for their first temperament test. There were some surprises and I expect in the next session, there will be more. At this time, I have four pups that she considers 'soft' - Black Boy, Green Boy, Stripe Boy and Orange Girl. This means AT THIS TIME they would be best suited for owners that will give them much more exposure than normal to help them develop into 'the best they can be'. This is not much different than a 'normal' pup but it is more important that you not take this commitment lightly. They would also do best in a 'less stressful' household which means not a lot of chaos - at least until the pup is properly acclimated. So by no means would you get this puppy home and immediately take it to a family party where lots of activity and noise would be happening. Give them a month or so of gentle exposure to life in your household. Eventually, all these pups will learn to trust you and feel safe which is all they want and need.

Will these pups grow and develop confidence before the next test? Yes, they certainly can. I will be working with each pup individually. I have ALWAYS found that pups with this type of temperament are the MOST loveable, cuddly, 'velcro' doodles. They simply want to please you and need very little correction. Positive re-enforcement and patience is a must. I get the best emails from my owners that have done this successfully.

Rumple tends to throw some soft puppies in all his litters. Every single one of them have turned into fabulous companions because each owner was given information regarding their personalities and they were handled accordingly. Each one worked with a trainer with experience with this type of personality and was able to bring out the best in each pup. I would expect the same results, with a good trainer, for the above pups.

Play, Play and Play some more. (7 weeks)

Oh thank goodness for some decent weather! They go in and out at will now and they just love it. The only times I shut them in their x-pen is when I feed them and for the night. Otherwise, it is open for them to go play or come in to lay down on the step or anywhere else in the puppy room. Believe it or not, I do sometimes find one or two on the big animal or in the crate. Many times, however, they love to lie under the ramp in the shade! They use the same spot to have a bark fest playing 'hide n seek'.

We have been working very hard on the play area, getting it prepared for the artificial turf. It is a tremendous amount of work and I thank God everyday, we have a tractor. Although somewhat handicapped, my husband Carl, is still adept at the tractor controls. Maybe, just maybe, we may have it done in another week. I so want this to be the first litter to enjoy it.

Please don't be alarmed if the pups have a dirty face, or something stuck on their fur - they are having a ball out there and 'puppies will be puppies'!

Outdoors on grey, misty days!

Yes, it has been dreary, misty and rainy for a couple of days at least but the pups still go outside 'between the drops' if at all possible. Pups need to run and expend energy to be happy. :+) They certainly don't mind. (If you see red 'X', ignore - all the pics are shown)

Can you tell which 'end' is which? These coats are soooo pretty albeit dusty!

I bet all of you are counting the days till your pup is home with you. :+)

In the meantime, they continue to enjoy the outdoors, play with Chaplin every now and again with supervision and grow.

This week, they have conquered using the doggie door. They have also learned that they can jump out of their x-pen when I leave the door open for them to venture outside - the ramp no longer makes them nervous. Both the aisle and the first paver pen has become their expanded play area in the mornings when there is shade. Later in the day, they are moved to the stone pen so that they do not have too much sun on them. Being outside is their favorite thing right now. Plus, they have Chaplin to tease as he is on the 'outside looking in'.

For today's six week pics, I brought them to the gardens for the most part. We are working on redesigning our pathway to the front door, so some pics have a bit of that in the background.

A brisk but sunny day had the pups outdoors for lots of shineshine and fresh air. They even had a 'picnic' lunch brought out to them. :+)

Starting with the black pup on the bottom right: Pink, Green, Red, Stripe, Black, Blue, Teal and Orange enjoyed their lunchtime meal. Now, they are playing for a bit. In about a half hour, I will bring them in for a nap. They will go out again later in the aisle instead of the stone pen. :+)

Early this morning, I went outside to spray bleach on both the stone play areas in the play-yard. I was hoping that the weather would stay good so that once the bleach mixture killed any germs, etc., I would then bring the pups out to experience being outdoors for the first time.

Thankfully, the weather held and later in the afternoon, I brought all the pups outdoors and boy did they love it!

Chaplin is on the other side of the fence and many of them rushed to greet him.

Here Orange and Teal girls examine the plastic horse. I actually have a cute cover for it, but left it off for outside.

There was much to discover...from the horse, to the Sit and Spin as well as the ramp.

Then there were the sticks and the leaves as Chaplin joined them for a bit of wrestling and socialization.

Blue Boy has the upper hand here over all the black doodles, including Chap!

Maple's group is finally becoming more 'doodle-like'. They are growing muzzle hair, coats are thickening up with waves and sniffing around the puppy room is a somewhat less 'intimidating' experience. Yes, new things such as noises, vacuums, sirens, etc. will see some of them hunker down, but only for a moment. All these 'introductions' are important for them to live through now.

Today, for instance, I brought them to the front of my house to take pics in one of my planters. The front is street side and there is a lot of traffic that goes by. Each of them cringed a little as a truck came whizzing, but none of them screamed or showed excessive anxiety - that is good! As they grow, so does their world and all it involves. Just always remember that when you take your pup home, do not isolate them - expose them to your neighborhood, traffic noises, malls and the like everyday or they will become so comfortable in your environment only, that they will be fearful in any other place. I cannot stress that enough. Just stay away from dog parks until they are fully vaccinated. Actually, I do not recommend dog parks until they are mature and can 'run with the crew' that frequents the park. Absolutely have them meet other suitable dogs - one on one so that they have the opportunity to schmooze with their kind, however. Puppy and Obedience classes are such places that benefit pups at this time. Going to pet stores is good, visiting family - I think you get the picture. :+)

I put a green scarf on Green Boy so his face can be seen better. He has a silky, wavy coat that is coming in beautifully. (4 & 1/2 lbs.)

Stripe Boy has a lush, soft coat. His nose continues to fill in with black pigment. Some pups take longer than others. (6 & 1/4 lbs.)

Pink Girl, like all the blacks, has that silky/satiny feel to her wavy coat. Don't you just love the pink bow? Although crooked, it still accents her face beautifully. (4 & 1/2 lbs.)

Teal Girl had her eyes on the ground - she might have been thinking 'what a BIG play-yard'! Isn't the 'cowlick' on her head a riot? So funny that dogs and people get them. (5 & 1/2 lbs.)

Black Boy is sprouting his cowlicks as well! The black areas on his coat are like his black litter mates, but his white patches favor the texture of Stripe Boy. This can be quite common on partis. (5 lbs.).

Blue Boy's coat is cottony soft and dense too. You will never have to put a sweater on him in the winter! (6 & 1/4 lbs.)

I just love Red Boy in this scarf! His coat is a tiny bit curlier than his sisters and brothers but silky soft. His muzzle will be quite straight however. It is my favorite combination of what coats can do. I am still very surprised that none of these pups are showing the tight curls of Maple yet. This boy weighs 4 & 1/2 lbs. just like his other black litter mates.

Orange Girl has the same thing with regard to coat as Black Boy. The apricot is silky but the white is more cottony. Both are soft and lovely to touch and cuddle with. (4 & 3/4 lbs.)

Let me tell you that little Chaplin is SUCH a dear! What a sweet personality and gentle manner. Chap loves to be with people and he loves to be patted.

Chaplin is your typical little dog with a big personality. He enjoys being with people, whether it be for a walk, watching you cook or taking a drive - he is a 'companion' through and through.

I continue to work with him on being left in a space that he can see you but not be in the same room with you. He gets vocal when you do this to him. I wait until he stops vocalizing and then allow him to come in and join me. I have to admit, that he does 'grumble' about the indignity of being physically separated and I can't help but smile.

Chaplin is a quick learner. Since I prefer that dogs not 'jump' on people, I am constantly working with him to not jump up. The rule here is that he receive no touches UNLESS he is sitting. Unfortunately for me, people cannot resist that adorable face and always say 'oh, I don't mind.'

He is a breeze to brush and his lovely soft, totally non-shedding coat is gorgeous. He is not a huge kisser, but does give kisses. Chap is great in the car.

This little guy likes other dogs as long as they don't physically abuse his small, but nicely built stature. He would do best in a home that has a stay at home parent; older kids that like to play nice or an older/younger couple who want a loving companion. He may be too much dog for very young, sensitive children that he can knock down. He would love another dog that is on the small side to befriend and snuggle with.

I noticed today that the pups were 'rubbing shoulders' when trying to potty, so a new arrangement had to be done for better accommodations. Adding more area is a pretty constant occurrance when raising puppies. Just like children, providing a stimulating environment is very important.

This pic shows an overall view of the new area. I switched sides in the room and they are now closer to the outer door. My grooming area has been moved back to its original spot. :+) Blue Boy seems to be enjoying the 'wider' view as well as the expanded potty area.

I also put in a decent size crate for them to check out. It appears that several of the puppies took to it right away!

The second group decided to snooze next to their new slide and step/climber. Mr. Monster watches over them from the corner. I think they like their new quarters. We will see how long it will be before I need to make another change. :+)

I know that our puppy customers are getting very antsy to visit and hold the pups! I am getting emails and calls often. Let us all enjoy the Easter Weekend and then I am sure visits will begin in earnest. :+)

A big project that we will begin very soon is to put in artifical grass in the puppy playground area. I am expecting the roll in a few days and preparations will begin right after. We are doing the installation ourselves. We will do our best to get this done during the weekdays, but may need a day on a weekend depending on helper availability. Please be patient as we strive to keep improving on the quality of care our dogs and puppies receive. Thanks!

These pups are doing so, so well. :+) Look at how much they have grown! Mommy now just stands for them to nurse.

Once finished, a quick trip to the potty box is in order. :+)

Then they walk around and greet and wrestle a bit with each other.

In this pic - Stripe, Black and Blue Boys are attempting to stay awake to play.

But, the group as a whole is looking for a comfy spot to take another nap.

A lot happened during Week 3 of Maple and Rumple's litter.

It always amazes me how rapidly puppies develop. No matter how many litters I have, this 'evolution' continues to dazzle me. :+)

In just one week, these pups have gone from barely lifting themselves up to now walking (albeit, not too sturdily) to a litter box and even lifting a leg over the short barrier to potty. No, they are not potty trained yet, but their attempt to do this is admirable.

I have had to switch over their area three times this week to accommodate their growth and learning curve. Even Maple stands or sits to nurse them and they stretch to find a nipple they can reach. Nourishment is also being supplemented through the combination of cooked, finely pulverized oatmeal, Gerber's baby meat and Goat's Milk. They have gone from 'not interested' to somewhat interested, to chow hounds in a matter of four days. :+)
