Although I was looking forward to my initial breeding plan using Dublin, I am also thrilled to have had the foresight to freeze Jaxon's sperm to have on hand in cases just like this. So appointments have been made, semen is being checked as I type, shipping plans and paperwork is scurrying about and Camden will hopefully undergo a successful albeit 'unconventional' mating. She and Jaxon had a previous litter together of adorable pups with cute markings, so let's hope we are as lucky this time around.
I guess we will welcome the first 2014 litter using new technology!
Camden Rose, a medium size (32 lb.), 18 inches. |
Jaxon, a miniature at 16 inches and 19 lbs. |
Best of luck. This is interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt has certainly been a learning curve! We also used opportunities afforded us by watching dog behavior. For some odd reason, Jaxon is smitten with my 'oldie but goodie', Annabelle. Jaxon would woo her and attempt to mount her at every opportunity and my girl seemed quite complimented by all his 'action'.
ReplyDeleteSo...... off we went with the 'cross eyed lovers' to the vet and voila! Annabelle stimulated Jaxon and we were able to collect and ship 'fresh chilled semen' instead of using the frozen pellets. This is typically the better method to use for higher sperm numbers. According to the vet in California, the critters arrived at 90% motility!! Their second honeymoon together produced another great sample as well!
We now call our Annabelle a 'cougar' with much affection. I know Jaxon likes the 'mature ladies' and feeding oysters boosts sperm production as well as 'mood'. Maybe this is more info than most want to read, but breeding will always be a learning experience and this kind of knowledge is being shared with a bit of a wry smile. :+)
