- Tomorrow, I will be bringing in Ms Sadie Benz for her first Progesterone Test. This tells me where she is with regard to her 'fertility' time. Generally, the first test is a baseline. The second time it is done, we are looking to see if her Leutinizing Hormone Surge (LH) has arrived and that is generally a '2' on the number scale. Once that occurs, the 'ovulation' number (which is a '5') appears about three days later. Once ovulation is confirmed, we wait a couple more days for those eggs to ripen enough so the sperm can easily penetrate the ova walls. As you can see, timing is critical to a successful mating! Lots of vet visits.
- On Friday, (a VERY important day for those interested in the Jonnie x Duckie Litter), she will be having an ultra sound to confirm she is pregnant. If she is, about two inch wide black 'blobs' will show up on the scan. This does NOT tell me how many pups she may be having, it just is proof positive that she is carrying pups. Once confirmed, Jonnie's pups will continue to grow for another 30 days or so and then she will come to me to have her fur-babies - always an exciting and tiring event for both of us.
